Donating vs Recycling Mattresses: Which Is Better?

September 9, 2024

If you're not aware, improper mattress disposal poses numerous risks—to the environment, the economy, your health, and even legal consequences.

When it's time to get rid of your old mattress, you might be torn between donating it to those in need or recycling it. Both options are more environmentally friendly than simply throwing it away, but which one is the better choice? Let's weigh the pros and cons.

Donating a Mattress: Pros and Cons

There’s a great feeling that comes with donating—it’s a thoughtful and impactful act. In fact, 2-3% of American children do not have their own bed or mattress. And there are tons of individuals in need for housing and basic needs. Donating one can definitely make a difference in their daily lives.

Pros of Mattress Donation:

  1. It helps those in need. Donating a mattress provides immediate relief to individuals, families, and homeless shelters who may not have the means to purchase a new one.
  2. It supports charitable organizations. Donations help local charities, non-profits, and other organizations in their effort to extend resources.
  3. It promotes a culture of giving. Donating evokes feelings of generosity and also encourages others to think about privilege and how they can contribute to helping those less fortunate.
  4. Tax deductions. Donating a mattress makes you eligible for a tax deduction in some regions. In the United States, you can generally claim a tax deduction for donating a mattress to a qualified charity in any state or region.
  5. It is somehow sustainable. By donating a mattress, you are giving it another home and means for use. However, this is a case to case basis as used mattresses can also be unhealthy.

Cons of Matress Donation:

  1. Condition requirements. Some charities only accept mattresses in either excellent or gently used conditions. Stained, torn, or heavily used mattresses are also often not accepted. This limits the capabilities and number of mattresses that can be donated.
  2. Health and safety concerns. Jumping from our point above, used mattresses can harbour pests, bacteria, and allergens which make them less desirable for donations and put more people at risk.
  3. Limited long-term impact. While donation helps individuals in the short term, it will still be rendered obsolete in a new years time, which does not address the long-term concerns associated with mattress disposal.
  4. Transportation. Donating a mattress requires you to arrange for transportation to a donation center or charity, which can be inconvenient and sometimes costly.

Note: We do not discourage the act of mattress donation, by all means please donate if possible as long as they are in a good enough condition.

Recycling a Mattress: Pros and Cons

As concerns about environmental sustainability grow, more people are looking for responsible ways to dispose of household items— including something as big and complicated as mattresses.

Mattress recycling an excellent option for those who want to minimize their environmental footprint. Fortunately, recycling mattresses has become more convenient, with mattress pickup and recycling services readily available to handle the process for you.

Pros of Mattress Recycling:

  1. Overall sustainability. Recycling is part of the circular economy. There are far more materials in mattresses than foam and fabric—such as steel and coil. With mattress recycling, these specific materials are ensured a second and better life.
  2. Environmental protection. Mattresses take up a lot of space. Can you imagine how many people in the world get rid of their mattresses? Recycling can greatly reduce its landfill space. Mattresses may also contain materials and chemicals that may leech into soil in landfills.
  3. Energy efficiency. It is more energy efficient to recycle rather than produce new materials from scratch. It translates into energy conservation and lower greenhouse gas emissions.
  4. Ease and accessibility. A lot of time goes into mattress disposal—cleaning, carrying, or even stripping away its parts if ever you decide to DIY recycle. But now, many local communities and businesses like The Mattress Guy now offer mattress recycling programs and curbside pick ups, making it easier than ever to recycle your old mattress. These programs are designed to handle mattresses of all conditions, ensuring that even heavily used or damaged mattresses can be disposed of responsibly. This also means that you dont need to carry or strip away any mattress parts that can cause harm.

Cons of Matress Recycling:

  1. Its impact is not as immediate. Recycling heavily focuses on environmental benefits rather than direct human aid, which means it doesn’t provide immediate help to those in need like donation does.
  2. Recycling fees. Some areas require you to pay a fee to recycle your mattress, which can be costly.
  3. Accessibility. Not all local communities have easy access to mattress recycling facilities, which can make recycling less convenient than other disposal methods.
  4. Complex process. Recycling a mattress can involve dismantling it into its components, which can be a more complex, energy-intensive, and even dangerous process.

So Which Is Better?

Both donating and recycling a mattress have their benefits and drawbacks. Donating is ideal if your mattress is in excellent condition and you want to directly help those in need. However, recycling offers a more comprehensive solution for environmental sustainability, making it the better choice if your primary concern is reducing waste and conserving resources. It is also more accessible with local curbside pick ups and recycling services.

Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) performance has become an essential part of how businesses measure responsible operations. Across the United States, investors and customers expect companies to take real action on sustainability, and not just talk about it. While many ESG programs focus on reducing emissions or improving energy efficiency, waste management often gets less attention. In industries like hospitality, healthcare, and property management, mattress waste and box springs make up a large portion of landfill waste and carbon emissions. By working with a trusted partner like The Mattress Guy Co, businesses can integrate a certified mattress recycling program into their ESG strategy. This turns a disposal challenge into measurable progress toward sustainability goals.
