What Is the Sleep Products Sustainability Program (SP2)?

Mar 07, 2022

In America alone, 20 million mattresses end up in landfills per year. This landfill contributes to carbon dioxide, methane, and other organic compound production. These gasses affect nearby wildlife and the environment as a whole.

Because of this damage, The Mattress Recycling Council launched a voluntary group. It's known as the Sleep Products Sustainability Program (SP2).

As you read on, you will learn how SP2 will change your bed into an environmentally friendly mattress. Moreover, you will learn about companies who take part in this initiative.

What Is the Sleep Products Sustainability Program (SP2)?

SP2 is an initiative where volunteers help manufacturers reduce waste from manufacturing. This initiative helps mattress companies examine all waste streams from their operations.

First, SP2 will offer manufacturers training. From there, the volunteers and companies will measure their operations' impact. Afterward, they plan and put in place changes that can reduce their impact.

Some examples of changes that manufacturers will do as a part of this program include:

  • Reducing water and electricity used during manufacturing
  • Shifting away from traditional foam and toward “green” alternatives
  • Mitigating carbon emissions from transportation
  • Increasing longevity of mattresses with higher-quality materials

How Pleasant Mattress Took Initiative

Pleasant Mattress moved toward creating a sustainable mattress in 2022. How? By participating in SP2.

Since taking part in the program, Pleasant Mattress went through massive changes. They later reported a 10% reduction in waste and energy.

Pleasant Mattress intends to upgrade their lighting systems to LEDs later on. Moreover, they plan to add a solar power system to offset the electricity they use.

Other Companies Who Followed Suit

Pleasant Mattress isn't the only company that has taken part in this program. Varying companies have taken part in SP2. Each has different changes that they've made to transform the way they impact the earth.

First off, there's Suite Sleep. To create an eco-friendly mattress, they went beyond searching for organically certified materials.

Instead of importing organic cotton, they opted for sourcing local cotton. This huge change reduced carbon emissions from transporting materials.

The next company to make a difference is Harrison Spinks. They obtained Carbon Neutral status while also developing an award-winning glue-free spring system.

Finally, there is Tempur Sealy International. They created an eco-friendly bed by operating their factories with 100% renewable energy. They also manage zero-landfill initiatives across the globe to promote environmentally friendly beds.

The Sleep Products Sustainability Program (SP2) has created various opportunities for businesses. They help create and repurpose an environmentally friendly mattress. Because of this initiative, wasted mattresses will contribute less to global warming.
